Writerly Wednesday: Do You Have Business Cards?

As writers we attend conferences, book signings, critique meet-ups, workshops, meetings with writing groups and / or societies, etc. We bring along notebooks, writing utensils, and all the things necessary for each event. But what if someone asks you for your card?

Recently I attended a writing event and gave out my contact information to about ten writers. As a writer, I was not prepared. Thankfully, I had yoga business cards with me. I felt foolish and unprofessional.

I've been writing seriously for five years now. Why do I not have business cards? Well, I think it's high time I act like a professional.

So last week, I designed my author business cards from Vistaprint. They were not only affordable, but simple & fun to create. I started with one of their templates, changed up the design, picked my fonts, sizes, colors, and viola!

Do you have cards? Do you think they're necessary? I'd love to hear your thoughts. :)

  1. I do have cards, but I pretty much had to have them. I think it's smart for writers to have them whether published or not. You can hand them out at conferences and other places.

  3. I think it's a great idea. I don't have any yet, but I do the vast majority of my communication by email/internet. I'll be getting some eventually... :)

    1. PS - I'll probably wait until I have a website and not just a blog.

  4. I had VISTAPRINT do my cards, too, to hand out at the SCI FI convention I spoke at. I even had bookmarks (for an eBook, mind you) made up to hand out. :-)

  5. I don't have any cards. Though if I were a true writer I might have some cards. Maybe with raised lettering? I love me some raised lettering.

  6. They're a cool thing to have. I haven't yet attended any of the events you mentioned, but I live in hope. :)

  7. I only recently got business cards, but I think it's a good idea. Also, I recommend custom bookmarks. We designed ours ourselves as well and it was fun. They look great and people have given us quite a few compliments on them.

  8. I do have cards! They are postcard size, with a color photo of my book cover on one side, and info about the novel on the other, with enough room to write any kind of info I might need in the moment.

  9. What a great idea! I'm not sure what I would put on them other than my name and 'Novelist' though, since I'm unpublished! Oh, maybe my blog. :)

  10. I do have business cards and think I used Vistapoint too. I even put my picture on them. I made the writing too small and will change that next time I order (but with a 500 card order, that will be a very long time). I too got them after going to a couple events and hand-writing out all my information. Not good.

  11. As a member of the Marketing world, I absolutely believe that business cards are a must! With the utilization of programs like MS Outlook and how visible peoples' contact lists are, it's one more huge way to potentially be seen. Speaking of, it's about time I order some new ones. Thanks for the reminder, Candilynn, and hope all is well in your life! Shoot me an email and let me know how you're doing!!
