Kick Em' While They're Up...Kick Em' While They're Down

Isn't it interesting how writers abuse and mistreat their main characters? We throw them curve balls, cause them to have accidents, put them in the middle of chaotic situations or worse, life or death scenarios. Why? Because we can. Because it makes an excellent story. Because readers desire to experience conflict with their favorite characters, as they cheer them on or cry on the sidelines. Readers want to feel. Experience. Relate.

This week's Warm & Fuzzies Blog Fest is all about exposing our malicious intents aimed at our main characters.
Juliana Brandt writes:

There’s something spectacular about the trauma main characters go through and the way they manage to come out on the other side healed. Sometimes, I wish I could experience a complete character arch like that, but in reality, being an MC would be awful.
This week, take a moment to look at the trouble you get your MC into. How do you kick them while they’re down? Without revealing too many secrets about your WIP- take us through your MC’s arch.

This week, we will visit the other Warm & Fuzzy blogger's blogs and come up with nifty titles for their works in progress.

My newest wip characters are still in the process of becoming who they are, so I'll use my YA historical fantasy I finished recently. It is currently title-less, so give me something great!!! The town's name is Vinegaroon, TX. There is also some element of fantasy for the time travel. Eerie is more like it...

What Title Would You Give Me...?

Seventeen-year-old, Josey Jones finds herself hurled into the past where she learns that life on the dusty pioneer trail is not only dangerous, but after she discovers she plays a vital role in an ancient family mystery, will she ever be able to find her way back home, and if she does, will she go?

  • College-bound Josey is ripped from the present and thrown into chaotic post Civil War Texas.
  • Outlaws, angered Natives, and starvation are not the only threats to trail life.
  • Abduction
  • Thirst
  • Venomous Reptiles
  • Brutal attacks
  • Near drownings
  • Temptation
  • And, then there would be the mysterious, creepy way she was catapulted through time...

  1. Title: I Wish I was a Fish

Drowning scares the crap out of me! My MC almost drowns a few times too. *shudders*

  4. Hmmm...I wonder if there is some hotline our MC's could call to report author abuse. If so, it should not be manned by Stephen King characters. The callers would get more grief than they tried to report.

As for a title, I was thinking BECKONED but there may be a few of those out there. So I'm thinking RUINED BY VINEGAROON.

  7. You have a beautiful blog!

Your poor MC! I'm not going to make it worse by making up a title... I'm not too good at it :)

  8. Cassie Mae~Am loving your creative titles around the blog fest. :))

Cortney~From all the research I did about trail life, I only exposed her to about 1/3 of the troubles. But yes, what did go wrong happened to her or she was greatly affected by it. Great title idea!

Jason~how funny, that's one of my chapter titles!

Catherine~Some days, the dust was so thick in the air it chokes the characters...

Rachael~Great idea, thanks for your visit:)

Angela~Beckoned, I like that. Although you're probably right about there being plenty of those. She definitely goes back in time for a reason. She didn't have a choice. It just was.

MC hotline, yes! someone needs to start one. lol. They could call it The MC Crisis Line. :))

Deana~I think it's interesting that both our wips are featuring time travel gals. Dust in Time, I love it!

Catherine~Thanks! Your thoughts mean a lot to me. Those are just a few of the abuse I put her through. One of these days, I'll dust off the file and start revising.

Kelley~Thank you!!! I've been contemplating the *look* of my blog for a few weeks now. It says a lot of about me and my writing, but there's something I'm missing. Just can't figure it out.

Thank you everyone for your visit and comments!

  11. Great title ideas! ~Patricia and Juliana, I'm sure Josey feels the past isn't easy and 2011 is a heck of a lot better than 1867!
